Reduced Numbers for Combined U.S. & Canadian Industrial Spending

RALEIGH, NC –November 1, 2018

Research by Industrial Reports, Inc. shows combined U.S. and Canadian planned capital spending reached only $22.81 billion in October compared to September’s $64.09 billion. August’s planned investment showed $46.74 billion. The research organization reported 243 planned U.S. and Canadian projects in October.

Planned U.S. project spending plummeted in October with $17.04 billion in planned investment compared to the September total of $55.66 billion.

Canadian planned investment showed a smaller drop in October with $5.77 billion in spending, down from $8.43 billion in September. Projects in both nations ranged in value from $500,000 to $2 billion.

Process projects led U.S. spending with $8.79 billion in planned investment, followed by manufacturing projects with $3.89 billion. Power and energy projects reported $1.62 billion in planned U.S. spending.

In Canada, process projects led all markets with $4.03 billion in planned spending, while manufacturing projects accounted for $1 billion.

Texas was the U.S. leader in planned investment for the month with $5.19 billion, followed by California with $1.61 billion and Virginia with $1.30 billion.

In Canada, Québec led the provinces and territories with $2.63 billion in planned spending. Alberta reported $1.53 billion and British Columbia reported $1.29 billion.

Texas was the leader in U.S. project activity with 16 planned projects. North Carolina reported 14 planned projects and South Carolina had 13.

Québec led Canadian project activity with six planned projects. Ontario reported five projects and British Columbia had four.
